The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.
Cancellieri's Surprising Presence
At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.
He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Finding His True Position
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
