All Fans is Encouraged to Be the Additional Haim Sister.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous supporters have publicly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a close trio. Their visuals often show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to start a band."

Award Nod

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness called for a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the band will always be their primary commitment.

"We have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
